BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD
The Eternal Purpose of God Before Time Began
The Revelation of Jesus Christ does not begin in Bethlehem.
It does not begin in Genesis.
It does not begin with Abraham.
It does not begin with Moses.
It does not begin with Israel.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ begins before the foundation of the world.
Before there was a sun to rule the day…
Before there was a moon to rule the night…
Before the heavens were stretched forth…
Before the earth was formed…
Before time began its appointed course…
God had already established His eternal purpose in Christ.
Nothing revealed in time originated in time.
Everything revealed in time proceeded from the eternal counsel of God.
The Scriptures do not present history as a series of divine reactions. They declare the unfolding of an eternal purpose that was complete in the heart of God before creation itself.
The beginning of wisdom is to see that God’s purpose did not evolve. It was established before the foundation of the world and revealed according to His appointed times.

CHOSEN IN CHRIST BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD

He does not begin with creation.

Notice carefully where the choice was made.

Christ is not God’s response to man’s failure.

THE LAMB WAS FOREORDAINED BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD
“Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”
1 Peter 1:20
Peter declares the same eternal truth.
Christ was not made the Lamb because Adam sinned.
He was foreordained before the foundation of the world.
What was hidden in eternity was manifested in time.
The manifestation did not create the purpose.

The Word became flesh.

God established His purpose before the foundation of the world.
He unfolds that purpose through the ages.
Time was never the author of God’s purpose.
Time is the stage upon which God’s eternal purpose is revealed.
The ages are not random periods of history.
They are divine administrations.
Each age has its appointed purpose.
Each administration moves the creation one step closer to the consummation of God’s eternal purpose in Jesus Christ.
The Plan of the Ages reveals the wisdom of God governing history from eternity to eternity.
Nothing stands outside His counsel.
Nothing escapes His purpose.
Everything moves according to His divine administration until Christ is fully revealed.
GOD DECLARES THE END FROM THE BEGINNING
“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

God does not journey through history searching for His will.
He declares the end before history begins.
The end is established before the beginning unfolds.
His counsel stands.
His purpose cannot fail.
His pleasure shall be accomplished.

THE MYSTERY HIDDEN FROM AGES
“Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints.”

Throughout the ages, God unfolded His purpose progressively.
The mystery was hidden.
Not because God had no purpose.
But because the appointed time for its unveiling had not yet arrived.

The word translated worlds also carries the thought of the ages.

EVERY MAN IN HIS OWN ORDER

The Bible is not merely the history of Israel.

Jesus Christ.

THE TWO TREES
The Contrast Between Life and the Knowledge of Good and Evil
“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
Genesis 2:9
The Revelation of Jesus Christ is the revelation of life.
From the opening pages of Genesis to the closing chapters of Revelation, the Scriptures set before us two trees.
These two trees reveal two sources.

THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL
“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it.”

The second tree reveals another source.
It is not merely the knowledge of evil.
It is the knowledge of good and evil.
Humanity often believes that goodness alone is sufficient.
Yet the knowledge of good and evil still leaves man independent of the life of God.
Religion may produce moral reform.
Law may restrain outward conduct.
Human wisdom may improve behavior.
But none of these can impart the life of Christ.
The issue in the garden was never simply morality.
The issue was the source of life.
Would man receive life from God…
or seek life through himself?

Throughout the Scriptures these two trees continue to appear.
One reveals dependence upon God.
The other reveals confidence in the flesh.
One points to promise.
The other to self-effort.
One reveals grace.
The other reveals law as man’s confidence in his own righteousness.
One produces rest.
The other produces striving.
One reveals Christ.
The other exalts self.
From Genesis to Revelation these two ways stand before every generation.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ unveils the superiority of life over knowledge, grace over self-effort, and Christ over every confidence in the flesh.
CHRIST IS OUR LIFE
“Christ, who is our life…”
Colossians 3:4
The Gospel does not merely improve the old creation.
It reveals a new creation.
The answer to death is not greater knowledge.
It is greater life.
That life is found in Jesus Christ alone.
He does not simply teach life.
He is life.

He is the way.

THE TREE OF LIFE APPEARS AGAIN
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life…”

What appeared in the garden is seen again in the New Jerusalem.
