Few subjects in the book of Revelation have produced more speculation than Mystery Babylon. Throughout history, countless interpretations have attempted to identify her with a particular nation, city, denomination, political system, or religious organization. Yet the angel’s invitation to John points us toward something deeper.
“Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore…” (Revelation 17:1)
Before God reveals her judgment, He first reveals her nature.
That order is not accidental. Throughout the Scriptures, God always brings light before separation, revelation before judgment, and truth before correction. He exposes what is hidden so His people may discern the difference between that which is born of the Spirit and that which proceeds from the flesh.
This book approaches Mystery Babylon through that biblical pattern.
Rather than asking, Who is Mystery Babylon?, we will ask a more fundamental question:
What is the Spirit of God revealing about her nature?
As we trace the full counsel of God, a remarkable portrait begins to emerge. The woman called Mystery Babylon is revealed through recurring biblical patterns that appear from Genesis to Revelation. Her inward life is seen in the carnal mind. Her character is illustrated through Jezebel. Her spiritual condition is portrayed as a harlot. Her dependence upon worldly power is revealed through the beast she rides. Finally, her mature manifestation appears as Babylon, the city of confusion opposed to the kingdom of God.
This study is not written to encourage fear or speculation. It is written to cultivate spiritual discernment.

CHAPTER ONE
THE CARNAL MIND
The Root of Mystery Babylon
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”

THE FIRST REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
Many believers begin their study of Mystery Babylon by asking one question:
Who is she?
The Scriptures begin somewhere much deeper.
Before God reveals a city…
before He reveals a woman…
before He reveals a beast…
He reveals a mind.
That is where our journey must begin.
If we fail to understand the carnal mind, we will never understand Mystery Babylon, because the outward manifestation can never be separated from its inward source.
God always begins with the root before revealing the fruit.
The fruit may change its appearance throughout history, but the root remains the same.
The purpose of this chapter is to expose that root.
MYSTERY BABYLON BEGINS IN THE MIND
Paul makes an astonishing statement in Romans.
“To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6)
Notice that Paul does not begin with outward actions.
He begins with the mind.
Everything that eventually appears outwardly first exists inwardly.
The thoughts…
the desires…
the ambitions…
the affections…
the motives…
all originate within the heart before they ever become visible.
This is why Mystery Babylon cannot first be understood as a city, a government, or a religious system.
She must first be understood as a way of thinking.
Until the mind is revealed, the symbols remain hidden.
GOD ALWAYS EXPOSES THE ROOT BEFORE THE FRUIT
Throughout the Scriptures, God consistently follows the same divine order.
He exposes the unseen before the seen.
He reveals the invisible before the visible.
He identifies the root before exposing the fruit.
Jesus Himself taught this principle repeatedly.
“Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.” (Matthew 12:33)
Fruit never exists independently.
It simply reveals the nature of the tree that produced it.
Likewise, Mystery Babylon is the fruit of a deeper spiritual root.
The Lord is not merely exposing behavior.
He is exposing the nature that produces that behavior.
THE CARNAL MIND LIVES INDEPENDENTLY OF GOD
The first characteristic of the carnal mind is independence.
Paul writes:
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” (Romans 8:7)
The issue is not simply disobedience.
The issue is self-government.
The carnal mind refuses God’s rule because it desires to establish its own.
This principle appears throughout the Bible.
In Eden, humanity chose independence over dependence.
At Babel, mankind united to establish a name for themselves.
Throughout Israel’s history, men repeatedly trusted human wisdom instead of God’s counsel.
Each event reveals the same inward principle.
The outward circumstances change.
The inward nature does not.
This is the first brushstroke in God’s portrait of Mystery Babylon.
THE CARNAL MIND EXALTS SELF
Every manifestation of Mystery Babylon exalts self above God.
The flesh seeks recognition.
It desires influence.
It craves prominence.
It longs for earthly glory.
James exposes this spirit when he writes:
“Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” (James 3:16)
Confusion is one of Babylon’s defining characteristics.
The connection is not accidental.
Self-exaltation always produces confusion because man attempts to occupy a place that belongs to God alone.
The kingdom of God exalts Christ.
The kingdom of Babylon exalts self.
These two kingdoms can never be reconciled.
THE CARNAL MIND PRODUCES THE WORKS OF THE FLESH
The inward nature always bears outward fruit.
Paul lists the works of the flesh in Galatians 5.
These works are not isolated sins.
They reveal the character of the fallen nature.
Hatred…
strife…
jealousy…
wrath…
selfish ambition…
envy…
and every other work of the flesh flow from the same corrupted source.
These are not merely actions.
They are revelations of the heart.
When the Spirit exposes Mystery Babylon, He is exposing this inward nature wherever it appears.
THE CARNAL MIND LOVES THE WORLD
John gives another defining characteristic.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world…” (1 John 2:15)
The issue is not creation itself.
The issue is misplaced affection.
The carnal mind continually seeks satisfaction through earthly glory rather than the life of God.
Its confidence rests in what can be seen.
Its treasure is earthly.
Its ambition is temporal.
This explains why Mystery Babylon is repeatedly associated with luxury, wealth, commerce, and worldly glory.
The outward symbols simply reveal the inward affection.
THE CARNAL MIND OPPOSES THE SPIRIT
Paul concludes by presenting the great contrast.
The flesh and the Spirit move in opposite directions.
The Spirit produces life.
The flesh produces death.
The Spirit submits to God’s government.
The flesh resists it.
The Spirit glorifies Christ.
The flesh glorifies itself.
Here we discover the great divide running through the entire Bible.
The conflict has never merely been between nations.
It has always been between two minds.
One mind proceeds from the Spirit.
The other proceeds from the flesh.
Every chapter that follows in this book will simply reveal another expression of this same conflict.
THE ROOT OF THE WOMAN
John first sees a woman.
Before we can understand her clothing…
her cup…
her beast…
or her city…
we must first understand her mind.
Everything she becomes grows from everything she already is.
The carnal mind is the unseen root from which Mystery Babylon grows.
Jezebel will reveal her character.
The harlot will reveal her spiritual condition.
The beast will reveal the power upon which she depends.
Babylon will reveal her mature manifestation.
But every one of those revelations begins here.
At the root.
At the mind.
At the nature.
Until that root is understood, Mystery Babylon will remain a mystery.
Once the root is exposed, the entire portrait begins to come into focus.
The light has begun to shine.
The distinctions have begun.
And the Spirit has taken the first step in revealing the true nature of Mystery Babylon.
CHAPTER TWO
JEZEBEL
The Character of Mystery Babylon
“Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel… to teach and to seduce my servants…”
— Revelation 2:20
THE SECOND REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
If the first chapter exposed the root of Mystery Babylon, this chapter reveals her character.
The carnal mind is invisible.
Jezebel makes that invisible nature visible.
She is not introduced in Scripture merely as a historical queen. She becomes one of the Bible’s clearest portraits of a nature that opposes the government of God.
John understood this portrait.
When the Lord addressed the church at Thyatira, He did not choose the name “Jezebel” by accident. He was connecting the church to a pattern already established throughout the Scriptures.
The Spirit was saying, “The same nature that worked then is working now.”
To understand Mystery Babylon, we must understand the spirit and character revealed through Jezebel.
JEZEBEL USURPS GOD’S GOVERNMENT
The first thing we learn about Jezebel is that she refuses God’s order.
She does not submit.
She seeks to rule.
Throughout the account in Kings, Jezebel continually moves herself into positions of authority that God never gave her. Rather than honoring the word of the Lord, she substitutes her own will for God’s government.
This is one of the defining characteristics of Mystery Babylon.
The flesh is never satisfied with submission.
It desires control.
It prefers self-government over God’s government.
This same principle reaches back to the Garden of Eden, where mankind chose independence instead of dependence upon God. It reaches forward into Revelation, where the woman rides the beast rather than submitting to the reign of the Lamb.
The outward settings change.
The inward nature remains the same.
JEZEBEL SILENCES THE PROPHETIC WITNESS
One of Jezebel’s most recognizable characteristics is her hostility toward the prophetic word.
She opposed Elijah.
She sought to destroy the prophets of the Lord.
She promoted voices that agreed with her while attempting to silence voices that confronted her.
Why?
Because truth exposes what darkness wants to conceal.
Light always reveals.
Darkness always resists.
This is why Mystery Babylon cannot tolerate a clear prophetic witness.
The prophetic word removes the covering.
It uncovers motives.
It exposes mixture.
It separates truth from error.
Whenever God’s light begins to shine, the spirit represented by Jezebel seeks to extinguish it.
JEZEBEL SEDUCES RATHER THAN CONVERTS
The Lord’s warning in Revelation 2 is striking.
Jezebel “teaches and seduces.”
The issue is not simply false doctrine.
It is the misuse of influence.
Truth leads people to Christ.
Seduction leads people toward self.
Seduction promises what appeals to the flesh while leaving the heart unchanged.
This is one of the distinguishing marks of Mystery Babylon.
She attracts before she transforms.
She persuades before she purifies.
She offers what the flesh desires instead of calling people to the transforming work of the Spirit.
That is why the Lord exposes her so plainly.
He is revealing a nature that imitates spirituality while drawing hearts away from complete devotion to Him.
CHAPTER THREE
THE HARLOT
The Spiritual Condition of Mystery Babylon
“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.”
— Revelation 17:4
THE THIRD REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
The first chapter revealed the root of Mystery Babylon.
The second chapter revealed her character through Jezebel.
Now the Spirit reveals her spiritual condition.
John does not first describe a city.
He does not first describe a kingdom.
He describes a woman.
Throughout the Scriptures, a woman frequently represents a covenant relationship. A faithful woman pictures faithfulness to God. An unfaithful woman pictures spiritual adultery.
The image of the harlot is therefore not chosen to shock the reader.
It is chosen to reveal a condition of the heart.
The Lord is exposing what happens when covenant devotion is exchanged for worldly affection.
This is the spiritual condition of Mystery Babylon.
THE HARLOT LEAVES HER FIRST LOVE
The defining characteristic of a harlot is unfaithfulness.
She abandons covenant for another affection.
Throughout the Old Testament, the prophets repeatedly described Israel’s idolatry as spiritual harlotry because the people departed from wholehearted devotion to the Lord.
The issue was never merely outward idols.
The issue was divided affection.
God has always desired a people whose hearts belong entirely to Him.
The harlot represents the opposite condition.
She loves something besides the One to whom she belongs.
This is the first great distinction revealed in Mystery Babylon.
The Bride remains faithful.
The harlot does not.
THE HARLOT ADORNS HERSELF FOR WORLDLY GLORY
John immediately notices how the woman is clothed.
She is arrayed in purple.
Scarlet.
Gold.
Precious stones.
Pearls.
These descriptions are not given merely to describe luxury.
They reveal her priorities.
Everything about her presentation is outward.
She carefully adorns herself to attract attention.
Her confidence rests in appearance rather than transformation.
Throughout Scripture, God has always looked beyond the outward appearance into the heart.
The harlot reverses that order.
She magnifies the outward while neglecting the inward.
Jesus exposed this same principle when He said:
“Ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.” (Matthew 23:25)
The Lord always begins with the inside.
The harlot is occupied with the outside.
That contrast exposes another feature of Mystery Babylon.
THE HARLOT MAKES HOLY THINGS MERCHANDISE
A harlot does more than display herself.
She offers herself for gain.
She turns relationship into transaction.
This principle reaches far beyond immorality.
Throughout the Scriptures, God condemns the commercialization of what belongs to Him.
Peter warned of those who would, through covetousness, make merchandise of people with deceptive words.
The issue is not merely money.
The issue is the heart.
Whenever spiritual things become a means of personal advancement…
whenever truth becomes a tool for earthly gain…
whenever ministry becomes a marketplace…
the nature of the harlot begins to appear.
This is another feature of Mystery Babylon.
She continually exchanges eternal values for temporal advantage.
THE HARLOT REPRODUCES HER OWN NATURE
Darkness always reproduces darkness.
Truth reproduces truth.
The woman in Revelation is called:
“The mother of harlots.”
A mother produces offspring after her own kind.
This title reveals that Mystery Babylon is not simply an isolated individual.
She reproduces her nature.
Her influence spreads.
Her ways are learned.
Her values become established in those who embrace them.
This explains why the Spirit spends so much time exposing her character.
God desires His people to discern the source before they reproduce its fruit.
The Lord is not merely identifying error.
He is revealing its offspring.
THE HARLOT IS BEAUTIFUL OUTWARDLY BUT FILLED WITH ABOMINATIONS
Perhaps the greatest contrast in Revelation 17 is found in John’s description of the woman herself.
Outwardly she appears magnificent.
Inwardly she carries a golden cup filled with abominations.
The appearance and the reality are not the same.
This has always been one of the great warnings of Scripture.
God is never deceived by outward beauty.
He weighs the heart.
The harlot carefully prepares her appearance.
The Lord examines her nature.
This is why Revelation 17 is an unveiling.
The Spirit removes every covering.
He exposes what lies beneath the ornamentation.
He reveals the true condition of Mystery Babylon.
THE PORTRAIT OF THE HARLOT
By now the portrait is becoming unmistakable.
The carnal mind revealed her root.
Jezebel revealed her character.
The harlot now reveals her spiritual condition.
She has abandoned covenant faithfulness.
She seeks outward glory rather than inward transformation.
She turns what is holy into merchandise.
She reproduces her own nature.
She appears beautiful while concealing corruption within.
The Lord has not revealed these things to produce fear.
He has revealed them to produce discernment.
Before God judges Mystery Babylon, He first uncovers her.
Before He calls His people to come out of her, He first teaches them how to recognize her.
The light is shining.
The portrait is becoming clearer.
The mystery is beginning to give way to revelation.
CHAPTER FOUR
THE BEAST
The Power Behind Mystery Babylon
“And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast…”
— Revelation 17:3
THE FOURTH REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
The first chapter revealed the root of Mystery Babylon.
The second chapter revealed her character.
The third chapter revealed her spiritual condition.
Now the Spirit reveals the power behind her influence.
John does not merely see a woman.
He sees a woman riding a beast.
That detail is one of the most important revelations in the entire vision.
The woman is not walking.
She is not standing.
She is riding.
The Spirit immediately reveals that her authority is not her own.
She depends upon another power to carry her.
Until we understand the beast, we will never understand the power that sustains Mystery Babylon.
THE BEAST RECEIVES ITS AUTHORITY FROM THE DRAGON
Before John introduces the beast, he first introduces the dragon.
The order is intentional.
The dragon gives authority to the beast.
The beast carries the woman.
Every source of authority can therefore be traced back to its origin.
The beast is not independent.
Neither is the woman.
Both depend upon a power outside themselves.
This is one of the first great distinctions revealed in Mystery Babylon.
God’s kingdom receives its authority from the Father through the Son.
The kingdom of darkness receives its authority through another source.
The Spirit wants us to discern the source before we admire the power.
Power alone never proves divine approval.
The source of the power must always be examined.
THE BEAST RULES THROUGH EARTHLY POWER
Throughout the Scriptures, beasts represent earthly kingdoms and systems of government.
Daniel saw beasts rising out of the sea.
John sees the same prophetic pattern reaching its fullness.
The beast represents power organized apart from the government of God.
Its strength is found in force.
Influence.
Control.
Dominion.
Fear.
The kingdom of Christ advances by truth.
The beast advances by earthly power.
This is why Mystery Babylon finds the beast so attractive.
The flesh naturally trusts what appears strong.
Faith trusts the invisible kingdom of God.
The beast therefore becomes a picture of confidence placed in worldly strength rather than divine life.
THE BEAST EXALTS HUMAN GOVERNMENT
From the Tower of Babel to the kingdoms described by Daniel, Scripture continually reveals mankind’s attempt to govern independently of God.
The beast becomes the mature expression of that same principle.
Human wisdom replaces divine wisdom.
Human government replaces God’s government.
Human authority seeks the place that belongs to Christ alone.
This is another characteristic of Mystery Babylon.
She is comfortable wherever the government of man is exalted above the government of God.
The issue is never merely political.
The issue is spiritual.
Whenever man becomes the ultimate authority, the spirit of Babylon begins to appear.
The beast is simply that spirit organized into power.
THE BEAST CARRIES THE HARLOT
John does not say the woman controls the beast.
He says she rides it.
That picture is filled with revelation.
The woman depends upon the beast for her influence.
Her position is maintained because another power supports her.
Without the beast, she cannot maintain her place.
This reveals another important truth about Mystery Babylon.
She does not possess life within herself.
She borrows strength.
She borrows influence.
She borrows authority.
Everything about her depends upon external support.
The kingdom of Christ is entirely different.
Christ Himself is the source of life, authority, truth, and power.
The woman depends upon the beast.
The Bride depends upon the Lamb.
That distinction separates the two kingdoms.
THE BEAST ULTIMATELY DESTROYS THE HARLOT
One of the most remarkable moments in Revelation is when the beast turns against the woman.
The very power that carried her becomes the instrument of her destruction.
This reveals the nature of every kingdom built upon the flesh.
The flesh eventually consumes itself.
Selfish ambition destroys itself.
Pride eventually collapses under its own weight.
The systems of men can never produce lasting peace because they are built upon a foundation that cannot endure.
The woman trusted the beast.
The beast betrayed the woman.
The kingdom she trusted became the means of her judgment.
This is the inevitable end of Mystery Babylon.
Everything built apart from God’s government ultimately falls.
THE POWER BEHIND THE WOMAN
The portrait is becoming clearer with every chapter.
The carnal mind revealed the root.
Jezebel revealed the character.
The harlot revealed the spiritual condition.
Now the beast reveals the power behind the system.
The woman does not stand alone.
She is carried.
She is sustained.
She is supported by earthly authority rather than the life of God.
This explains why the Lord exposes the beast before revealing Babylon’s complete destruction.
God wants His people to discern the source of the woman’s strength.
Only then can they understand why her kingdom cannot stand.
Every kingdom founded upon the wisdom of man eventually falls before the kingdom founded upon the wisdom of God.
The light continues to shine.
The portrait grows clearer.
The Spirit has now revealed the power behind Mystery Babylon.
The final revelation still awaits.
When the portrait is complete, we will see not merely a woman…
not merely a beast…
but an entire kingdom brought to maturity.
That kingdom is Babylon.
CHAPTER FIVE
BABYLON
The Full Manifestation of the Carnal Nature
“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen…”
— Revelation 18:2
THE FIFTH REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
The portrait is now complete.
The first chapter revealed the root.
The second revealed the character.
The third revealed the spiritual condition.
The fourth revealed the power behind the system.
Now the Spirit reveals the finished manifestation.
The woman has become a city.
The nature has become a kingdom.
The seed has produced its harvest.
This is Mystery Babylon fully grown.
Babylon is not merely the beginning of confusion.
She is the mature manifestation of everything the carnal mind has been producing since the beginning.
The Lord has patiently exposed every layer of her character so that when He finally announces her fall, His people understand exactly why she must fall.
BABYLON IS THE KINGDOM OF CONFUSION
The first mention of Babylon reaches back to Babel.
There mankind united around one purpose.
Not to glorify God.
But to exalt themselves.
“Let us make us a name…” (Genesis 11:4)
Those words expose the very heart of Babylon.
Self-exaltation.
Human achievement.
Independence from God.
The Lord answered by confusing their language.
Babylon therefore becomes the biblical picture of confusion born from independence.
Confusion is never the work of God.
Confusion is the fruit of the flesh attempting to occupy the place of the Spirit.
This same principle reaches its fullest expression in Mystery Babylon.
What began as a tower has become a kingdom.
BABYLON UNITES RELIGION WITH THE WORLD
One of the remarkable features of Babylon is her ability to unite things that should never be joined.
She mixes the holy with the common.
Truth with error.
Light with darkness.
The Spirit repeatedly exposes mixture because mixture always produces confusion.
Throughout the Scriptures, God continually separates.
Light from darkness.
Israel from Egypt.
The holy from the profane.
The clean from the unclean.
The wheat from the tares.
The sheep from the goats.
Babylon reverses God’s order.
She blends what God separates.
This is why Mystery Babylon appears so attractive.
Mixture is often easier to embrace than holiness.
Compromise is usually more comfortable than complete surrender.
Yet God never builds His kingdom through confusion.
He builds it through truth.
BABYLON MAKES COMMERCE HER GLORY
Revelation 18 presents one of the most detailed descriptions of commerce found anywhere in Scripture.
Merchants.
Cargo.
Luxury.
Trade.
Wealth.
The city measures success by accumulation rather than transformation.
Everything has become merchandise.
Even human lives.
The issue is not business itself.
The issue is what the heart worships.
When earthly gain becomes the measure of spiritual success, Babylon’s values have replaced God’s values.
The kingdom of Christ measures greatness by service.
Babylon measures greatness by possession.
The kingdom of Christ freely gives.
Babylon continually asks,
“What can I gain?”
This is another unmistakable characteristic of Mystery Babylon.
BABYLON FALLS UNDER THE WEIGHT OF HER OWN NATURE
The announcement from heaven is both powerful and certain.
“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen…”
The judgment does not come because God is unpredictable.
It comes because Babylon has reached her fullness.
Everything planted in the flesh eventually reaches its harvest.
Pride collapses.
Greed destroys itself.
Self-government cannot endure forever.
The beast eventually turns upon the woman.
The kingdom built upon human wisdom eventually consumes itself.
Babylon carries within herself the seeds of her own destruction.
The Lord simply reveals what has always been true.
Everything built apart from Christ is temporary.
Only the kingdom of God cannot be shaken.
BABYLON FALLS BEFORE THE NEW JERUSALEM APPEARS
This is one of the most beautiful patterns in Revelation.
God does not end the story with Babylon.
He ends it with the Bride.
The Holy Spirit intentionally places these two women side by side.
One is adorned by the world.
The other is adorned by God.
One seeks earthly glory.
The other reflects heavenly glory.
One rides the beast.
The other belongs to the Lamb.
One becomes a habitation of darkness.
The other becomes the dwelling place of God.
The contrast is deliberate.
The Spirit is teaching us discernment.
The more clearly we see Babylon…
the more glorious the New Jerusalem becomes.
The exposure of darkness prepares us to appreciate the beauty of the Bride.
THE MYSTERY HAS BEEN REVEALED
The journey that began with the carnal mind now reaches its conclusion.
The root has produced its fruit.
The hidden nature has become a visible kingdom.
The portrait is complete.
The carnal mind produced independence.
Jezebel revealed manipulation.
The harlot revealed spiritual unfaithfulness.
The beast revealed worldly power.
Babylon revealed the finished kingdom of confusion.
The mystery is no longer hidden.
The Lord has turned on the light.
He has patiently exposed every feature of the woman.
Not to satisfy curiosity…
but to produce discernment.
Now His people understand why heaven calls,
“Come out of her, my people…”
The call is not merely to leave a city.
It is a call to leave behind the entire nature of Mystery Babylon.
It is a call to reject the carnal mind.
To forsake mixture.
To refuse the wisdom of the beast.
To embrace the government of Christ.
Only then are God’s people prepared to behold the final and glorious vision.
Not the great city of confusion…
but the Holy City.
Not the great harlot…
but the Bride.
Not Babylon…
but New Jerusalem.
The light has completed its work.
The mystery has become revelation.
CHAPTER SIX
COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE
God’s Call to Separation Through Truth
“And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”
— Revelation 18:4
THE SIXTH REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
The portrait is now complete.
The Spirit has exposed the root.
He has revealed the character.
He has uncovered the spiritual condition.
He has identified the power behind the system.
He has shown us Babylon in her mature manifestation.
Now heaven speaks.
The voice does not begin with judgment.
It begins with an invitation.
“Come out of her, my people.”
Those words reveal something remarkable.
God still has people who are surrounded by Mystery Babylon.
His purpose is not merely to announce her destruction.
His purpose is to prepare His people for His kingdom.
This chapter is not about escaping geography.
It is about embracing truth.
GOD ALWAYS SEPARATES BEFORE HE JUDGES
This principle appears throughout the Scriptures.
Before the flood, Noah entered the ark.
Before Sodom fell, Lot was brought out.
Before Israel left Egypt, the Passover lamb was slain.
Before Jericho fell, Rahab was gathered into safety.
Before Babylon falls, heaven calls.
God’s order never changes.
First comes light.
Then revelation.
Then separation.
Finally comes judgment.
This is one of the great themes running throughout the entire Bible.
God never delights in judgment.
He delights in redemption.
The call to come out is an invitation of mercy.
COME OUT OF HER IS A CALL TO LEAVE HER NATURE
Many have understood this verse as a command to leave a particular religious system.
While there are times when God’s people are called to separate from practices contrary to His Word, the deeper issue in Revelation reaches beyond outward association.
The Lord has spent five chapters revealing the nature of Mystery Babylon.
The call now becomes obvious.
Come out of…
the carnal mind.
Come out of…
Jezebel’s manipulation.
Come out of…
the harlot’s unfaithfulness.
Come out of…
dependence upon the beast.
Come out of…
Babylon’s confusion.
The Lord is calling His people out of a way of thinking and into the mind of Christ.
This is a call to inward transformation.
THE LIGHT MAKES THE SEPARATION
No one can leave what they cannot discern.
This is why Revelation 17 comes before Revelation 18.
The Lord first says,
“Come hither; I will show thee…”
Only after the woman is revealed does He say,
“Come out of her…”
Light always precedes separation.
The Spirit never asks His people to walk blindly.
He teaches.
He reveals.
He uncovers.
Then He calls.
This has always been God’s way.
Jesus first exposed the leaven of the Pharisees.
Then He called His disciples to beware.
Truth makes separation possible.
THE MIND OF CHRIST IS THE GREAT CONTRAST
Paul exhorts believers,
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5)
The conflict has always been between two minds.
The carnal mind seeks its own glory.
The mind of Christ humbles itself.
The carnal mind grasps for power.
The mind of Christ serves.
The carnal mind builds Babel.
The mind of Christ builds the kingdom of God.
The call to come out of Mystery Babylon is ultimately a call to receive the mind of Christ.
Transformation begins within.
When the mind is renewed, the life begins to change.
GOD IS PREPARING A BRIDE
The purpose of separation is not isolation.
It is preparation.
The Lord is preparing a people who reflect His character.
A Bride who loves the Bridegroom.
A people who walk in truth.
A people whose confidence rests in Christ rather than the systems of this world.
This is why the Spirit exposes Mystery Babylon so thoroughly.
He is removing every counterfeit so that His people may embrace the genuine.
Every distinction prepares the Bride.
Every revelation removes confusion.
Every truth brings God’s people closer to His eternal purpose.
THE CALL OF THE SPIRIT
The voice from heaven still speaks.
It is not a voice of condemnation.
It is a voice of invitation.
Come out of confusion.
Come out of mixture.
Come out of self-government.
Come out of worldly wisdom.
Come out of every form of Mystery Babylon.
Come into the kingdom of God.
Come into the government of Christ.
Come into the light.
Come into the truth.
The Lord is not merely calling His people away from something.
He is calling them unto Someone.
The journey that began with exposing the woman now prepares us to behold another woman.
Not the great harlot…
but the Bride.
Not Babylon…
but New Jerusalem.
Not confusion…
but glory.
The light has accomplished its purpose.
The separation has begun.
Now the Spirit is ready to reveal the greatest vision of all.
The Bride of the Lamb.
CHAPTER SEVEN
THE BRIDE
The Divine Contrast to Mystery Babylon
“Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
— Revelation 21:9
THE FINAL REVELATION OF MYSTERY BABYLON
The journey is now complete.
The Lord has exposed the carnal mind.
He has revealed Jezebel.
He has uncovered the harlot.
He has identified the beast.
He has shown us Babylon in her full manifestation.
He has called His people to come out of her.
Now the vision changes.
The wilderness disappears.
The mountain appears.
The woman changes.
The city changes.
Everything changes.
The Lord has not spent six chapters exposing Mystery Babylon simply to leave His people looking at darkness.
He now unveils His eternal purpose.
The Bride.
GOD ALWAYS REVEALS THE COUNTERFEIT BEFORE THE GENUINE
Throughout the Scriptures, God teaches His people through contrast.
Darkness reveals the beauty of light.
Death magnifies the glory of life.
The first Adam prepares us for the last Adam.
The old covenant prepares us for the new covenant.
Babylon prepares us for New Jerusalem.
The harlot prepares us for the Bride.
The Lord has patiently exposed every feature of Mystery Babylon so that His people will immediately recognize the beauty of the Bride.
The two women stand as complete opposites.
One belongs to the beast.
The other belongs to the Lamb.
One is filled with confusion.
The other is filled with the glory of God.
THE BRIDE POSSESSES THE MIND OF CHRIST
Everything began with the mind.
The carnal mind produced Mystery Babylon.
The mind of Christ produces the Bride.
Paul writes,
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5)
The Bride does not seek her own glory.
She seeks the glory of her Bridegroom.
She does not exalt herself.
She humbles herself.
She does not rule through manipulation.
She serves through love.
She does not depend upon earthly power.
She depends entirely upon the life of Christ.
This is the great contrast that has been unfolding throughout the entire book.
Two minds.
Two kingdoms.
Two women.
THE BRIDE IS FAITHFUL TO THE LAMB
The harlot abandoned covenant.
The Bride embraces covenant.
The harlot sought many lovers.
The Bride has only one.
The Lamb.
Everything about the Bride reveals faithfulness.
Her devotion is undivided.
Her affection is pure.
Her confidence rests completely in Christ.
She has no desire to borrow the power of the beast because she possesses something infinitely greater.
She possesses the life of God.
This is why the Scriptures continually describe the Church as a chaste virgin prepared for Christ.
The Lord has always desired a people whose hearts belong entirely to Him.
The Bride is the fulfillment of that desire.
THE BRIDE IS ADORNED BY GOD
John now sees another woman.
She is also adorned.
But notice the difference.
The harlot adorned herself.
The Bride is adorned by God.
One trusted outward appearance.
The other reflects inward glory.
One wore the wealth of Babylon.
The other shines with the glory of God.
This is one of the greatest distinctions in all of Revelation.
Everything the harlot manufactured…
the Bride receives by grace.
She has nothing to boast in except her Lord.
Her beauty is not self-produced.
It is the beauty of Christ reflected through His redeemed people.
THE BRIDE IS THE DWELLING PLACE OF GOD
John declares,
“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men…” (Revelation 21:3)
This is the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Lord has desired to dwell with His people.
Sin interrupted that fellowship.
Redemption restored it.
The Bride becomes the habitation of God.
Babylon became a habitation of every unclean spirit.
The Bride becomes the habitation of the Holy Spirit.
Nothing could reveal a greater contrast.
One city is filled with confusion.
The other is filled with God’s presence.
One reflects the kingdom of man.
The other reflects the kingdom of God.
THE GLORY OF GOD HAS REPLACED THE GLORY OF MAN
Babylon gloried in wealth.
The Bride glories in God.
Babylon measured greatness by power.
The Bride measures greatness by love.
Babylon trusted earthly kingdoms.
The Bride trusts the everlasting kingdom.
Babylon sought the praise of men.
The Bride seeks the approval of the Lamb.
The contrast is complete.
Everything Mystery Babylon loved…
the Bride leaves behind.
Everything Christ values…
the Bride embraces.
This is the transformation that the Spirit has been revealing throughout this entire book.
THE PORTRAIT IS COMPLETE
The Lord has accomplished exactly what He promised.
He said,
“Come hither, I will show thee…”
And He has.
He has shown us the nature of Mystery Babylon.
He has exposed the root.
He has revealed the character.
He has uncovered the spiritual condition.
He has identified the power.
He has shown the finished kingdom.
He has called His people to come out.
And now He has unveiled the Bride.
The mystery has become revelation.
The light has removed the darkness.
The truth has separated the holy from the profane.
The portrait is complete.
There are only two women in the closing vision of Revelation.
One rides the beast.
The other walks with the Lamb.
One builds confusion.
The other reflects God’s glory.
One passes away.
The other endures forever.
The purpose of this book has never been merely to expose Mystery Babylon.
Its purpose has been to prepare our hearts to behold the beauty of the Bride.
For when we clearly discern the nature of the great harlot…
we are finally able to fully appreciate the glory of the Lamb’s wife.
The final vision of Scripture is not Babylon.
The final vision is Christ dwelling with His redeemed people forever.
That has always been God’s eternal purpose.
