At its simplest level, the atonement refers to:

Scripture declares:

“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” — Romans 5:11

Definition — What Entered Through the Fall?

To understand the atonement, we must first understand the problem it answers.

Scripture reveals that through one man, sin entered the world—and with sin came death:

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…” — Romans 5:12
“For the wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23
“In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” — Genesis 2:17

Sin is not merely wrong behavior—it is a condition that affects the whole man.

Through sin came:

“The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering… keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity… and that will by no means clear the guilty…” — Exodus 34:6–7

God is:

Judgment means:

God does not ignore sin—

The Priesthood and the Sacrifice — God’s Appointed Way of Reconciliation

Definition — The Role of the Priest and the Sacrifice

In Scripture, atonement is never approached casually. God established a divine order through which reconciliation would take place: the priest and the sacrifice.

The priest represents man before God.
The sacrifice is offered to deal with sin.

“For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.” — Hebrews 5:1
“Without shedding of blood is no remission.” — Hebrews 9:22

Under the law:

The priest stood between God and man
The sacrifice was offered for sin
The blood was presented before God

This system was not random—it was God’s appointed pattern.

Revelation — The Priest Stands as Mediator

The priest is a mediator—one who stands between two parties to bring them together.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5

The priest:

Represents man before God
Carries the need of the people
Brings offerings on their behalf

In the Old Covenant:

The priest was a man with weakness
He had to offer for himself and for the people
“Who can have compassion on the ignorant… for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.” — Hebrews 5:2–3

This revealed a limitation:

Revelation — The Sacrifice Addresses Sin and Guilt

The sacrifice was given to deal with:

Sin
Guilt
Uncleanness
“It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” — Leviticus 17:11

Different offerings revealed different aspects:

Sin offering — dealing with guilt
Burnt offering — total surrender
Peace offering — restored fellowship

But all had one thing in common:

Yet Scripture makes something clear:

“It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” — Hebrews 10:4

The sacrifices pointed forward—
But they could not complete the work.

Everything in the priesthood system was a shadow of something greater.

“Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” — Colossians 2:17

The priest pointed to:

The blood pointed to:

The system itself declared:

Revelation — Christ Is Both Priest and Sacrifice

What no man could do, Christ fulfilled completely.

He is:

The Priest who offers
The Sacrifice that is offered
“By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption.” — Hebrews 9:12
“Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” — Psalm 110:4

Unlike the Levitical priests:

He is sinless
He does not need to offer for Himself
He does not repeat the sacrifice

He offers:

This is the turning point of all Scripture.

Revelation — One Offering, Once for All

Under the law:

Many sacrifices
Repeated offerings
Never fully complete

In Christ:

One sacrifice
One offering
Complete and final
“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down…” — Hebrews 10:12
“For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” — Hebrews 10:14

The repetition ended—
Because the perfect offering had come.

Revelation — The Heavenly Priesthood

Christ’s priesthood is not earthly—it is heavenly and eternal.

The Application of the Atonement — Faith, Grace, and Union with Christ

Definition — How Is the Atonement Applied?

The atonement is finished in Christ—but it must be applied in us.

Scripture declares:

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand…” — Romans 5:2
“For by grace are ye saved through faith…” — Ephesians 2:8

The application of the atonement involves:

👉 Grace — what God provides
👉 Faith — how we receive
👉 Union — where we live

The work is complete—
But it must be entered into and experienced.

Revelation — Grace: God’s Provision

Grace is the source of the atonement’s application.

“Being justified freely by his grace…” — Romans 3:24
“Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” — Romans 5:20

Grace means:

God initiated
God provided
God accomplished

Man does not:

He receives:
👉 What God has already done

Faith is how we enter into what Christ has finished.

“Therefore being justified by faith…” — Romans 5:1

Trust in Christ
Agreement with truth
Receiving what is already accomplished

Faith does not:

It receives:
👉 The finished work

Revelation — Union: The Reality of the Atonement

The deepest application of the atonement is union with Christ.

“He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 6:17
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…” — Galatians 2:20

👉 It is something you are brought into

You are:

Crucified with Him
Raised with Him

The atonement is meant to be lived.

“Walk in the Spirit…” — Galatians 5:16
“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.” — Colossians 2:6

This means:

Living from righteousness
Walking in peace
Operating in freedom
Manifesting new life

Revelation — Growth and Manifestation

The atonement unfolds in stages in our experience.

Seed → growth → fullness
“First the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.” — Mark 4:28

This is:
👉 The plan of the ages within the believer

What is finished in Christ:
👉 Is progressively revealed in us

Revelation — The Assurance of the Believer

Because the atonement is finished:

👉 Assurance is possible

Definition — What Is the Goal of the Atonement?

The atonement is not only about removing sin—it is about fulfilling God’s purpose.

Most have understood the atonement as:

Forgiveness
Escape from judgment
Personal salvation

These are true—but they are not the end.

Scripture reveals a greater goal:

“For whom he did foreknow… to be conformed to the image of his Son…” — Romans 8:29
“Bringing many sons unto glory…” — Hebrews 2:10

The goal of the atonement is:

Sonship, dominion, and the full restoration of God’s original intent.

Revelation — Sonship: The Restoration of Identity

The atonement restores man to his true identity.

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God…” — 1 John 3:2
“As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” — Romans 8:14

From:

Sinner
Slave
Stranger

To:
👉 Son
👉 Heir
👉 Member of God’s family

This is not symbolic—
👉 It is the restoration of identity

Revelation — Adoption and Inheritance

Sonship brings inheritance.

“If children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ…” — Romans 8:17
“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children…” — Ephesians 1:5

The atonement restores:

Relationship

Inheritance

What was lost in Adam:
👉 Is restored in Christ

Revelation — Dominion: The Restoration of Authority

From the beginning, God’s purpose included dominion.

“Let them have dominion…” — Genesis 1:26

The fall disrupted this—but the atonement restores it.

“Hath made us kings and priests… and we shall reign on the earth.” — Revelation 5:10

Dominion is not:

Oppression
Control
Violence

It is:
👉 Life ruling over death
👉 Light overcoming darkness
👉 Righteousness establishing order

Revelation — Kings and Priests

👉 Minister to God (priests)
👉 Rule in life (kings)

“Unto him that loved us… hath made us kings and priests…” — Revelation 1:5–6

👉 The government of God expressed through His people

The atonement restores what was lost in Eden.

“Let us make man in our image…” — Genesis 1:26
“Renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” — Colossians 3:10

👉 But transformation into God’s image

Creation is waiting for something:

“The earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” — Romans 8:19

Definition — The End of the Atonement

The atonement is not only about what Christ has done—
It is about where everything is going.

Scripture reveals a final outcome:

Christ is not only the Savior—
👉 He is the center of all things

Revelation — The Defeat of Every Enemy

Before the end comes, every enemy must be dealt with:

“He must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.” — 1 Corinthians 15:25
“The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” — 1 Corinthians 15:26

This reveals:

👉 Nothing remains outside His victory

Not:

Sin
Death
Darkness
Opposition

All must come under His rule.

Revelation — Death Itself Is Destroyed

The final enemy is death:

“There shall be no more death…” — Revelation 21:4

This is critical:

👉 If death remains, the work is incomplete
👉 But Scripture declares its end

The atonement does not stop at forgiveness—
👉 It ends in the destruction of death itself

Creation is not abandoned—it is restored.

The final statement of Scripture’s vision:

Everything:

Brought into harmony
Aligned with truth
Filled with His life

Nothing outside Him
Nothing resisting Him

👉 This is fullness

Revelation — The Atonement Fully Revealed

Now we see:

The atonement is not:

A partial solution
A temporary fix
A limited work

It is:
👉 The full revelation of God’s purpose

From:

Sin → righteousness
Death → life
Separation → union
Corruption → restoration

All brought into:
👉 One complete reality in Christ

Declaration — The End Is Declared

Let it be declared:

All things are reconciled.
All things are gathered.
All things are restored.

Death is destroyed.
Creation is renewed.
God is all in all.

The Lamb has finished the work—
And the fullness is revealed.

Call to Action — See the End From the Beginning

Do not live with a small vision.

See:

The end God has declared
The fullness He is bringing forth
The victory already secured in Christ

Align your faith with His purpose.

For the atonement is not only what has been done—
👉 It is what is being revealed… until all is complete.
